Hoi An - Vietnam

So here we are in Hoi An. These are our friends (and part time travel consultants!) Kate and Duncan. We first met on a trip to the Red Centre in Australia in January and were thrilled to be able to meet up with them again. We are having a good 'catch up' session here and partaking in a few snacks and the odd alcoholic beverage or two (well it would be rude not to!)

Kate actually met us off the bus - it was one of the nicest arrivals we've had on our trip. To actually come of the bus and see someone you know... just great!

Hoi An is quaint little place full of charm and character with narrow lanes full of interesting shops and cafes. Most people get a load of clothes made here as there are many tailor's who are only too keen to knock you up a suit, dress, replicate a favourite piece of clothing and even make you a pair of shoes!

Cup of tea question: How many items of clothing did Elvis have made up?

Hoi An was a bustling international trade centre in the 16th century and has some great looking buildings. Most of them are now boutiques and restaurants but done very well.

Aaaaaaaahh, look at these three. The kids are so cute, one of them was asking if we had any English coins. NO we snapped viciously!

We hired a motorbike to do some exploring of the surrounding areas. It was fascinating to drive along side the rice fields and also see the roadside full of corn, chillies and rice all drying out!

This woman was only too keen to show us her 'de-chaffed' rice and pose for the obligatory photograph. She may also of being showing off in a kind of 'the world might have no rice but we've got plenty na na na naaa na!' kind of way.

This is taken at a place called My Son where the famous 7th century Cham ruins are. It was VERY hot that day, which consequentially led to a very quick visit! To be honest, after the temples of Angkor, it's hard to be impressed by any other temple.

Harvesting the fields. Note nearly all done by hand.

Some of the old French buildings - just gorgeous!

This is the Tho Bon river that runs through Hoi An.

The narrow streets full of tailor shops, shoe shops, cafes and restaurants. It makes you wonder if this place was designed by women for women!!

On the last day we met up again by pure chance with Bethne and Conrad - so we had a meal together in the wonderful 'Cargo Club' and made some plans to meet up again in Saigon - which is exactly what happened - in another blog of course!
