White River National Forest (Near Aspen, Colorado)

Finally we've found a library with computers that will allow our camera to connect!! Some catching up to do now. These pictures are from Chapman campsite in White River National Forest. The first is 'another' Moonscape - when you're lying in your tent there's two things you notice about a full moon - how much light it gives off - otherwise it's literally so dark you cannot see you hand in front of you, the other thing is the coyote's start singing -not for the faint hearted. Our camp was right next to the river, that's Elvis cooling off while reading the book I bought her (How to be a loving Wife)!

When we left here we followed a road on the map, which was marked as unpaved - at first that's exactly what it was - a normal road with no tarmac. However after about five miles it turned into a 'very' unpaved road, even our 4 wheel drive SUV was struggling - at one point we had to drive through a full stream and up the bank on the other side. At first it was fun but after an hour of it - and a couple of occasions where the car bounced off a big rock, our bottoms were 'putting' like an out board motor! When we saw the sign for Hagerman pass (see picture) that's when we realised we shouldn't really have took that road - 12,000 feet at the top of a mountain wasn't a clever choice! We got down ok though. Just an interesting point about the sign, the continental divide is the precise place where water runs to both oceans - if rain falls to the left of the sign it eventually joins the Pacific ocean, if it falls to the right of the sign it goes to the Atlantic ocean - if it doesn't fancy either, it can just stay there as ice!!

This picture is from the top of the mountain looking back at the lakes of White River NF - a really beautiful place. We were leaving at this stage, heading for 'The Garden of the Gods' in Colorado Springs - the subject of a new blog me thinks!!
Happy Birthday Shaz for July 31st (or thereabouts) - glad to see you and Poll had such a good time in Croatia.
Hello to Derek and Margaret -it was great to hear from you, glad you're enjoying the pictures etc.
Hello to Debbie and Dean - our neighbours from that far off distant land of Sunderland, England - it was great to hear from you (what do you mean there's too many pictures of Keith?) Debbie - would you like me to bring a bandanna back for Dean so he can look really cool like Keith?
